There is nothing like Angkor Wat anywhere on this planet! The Angkor Temples are spread out over a vast 100sq kilometre jungle site. At its core the 9sq Km Angkor Thom, or Great City, is contained with high square walls with huge faces carved in the spectacular gateways. Many of the fabulous sights within it, are a world class attractions in their own right.

But this is just the starting point. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world is so big as to be hard to take in at once. The 200 metres wide moat and causeway with the 350 meters entrance portico is impressive enough, but the grandeur within its square mile of walls is truly stunning. Over 1 kilometer of spectacular carvings lie within its outer galleries and a vast labyrinth of passages, courtyards and the five lotus flower towers at its centre.

The Bayon Temple and the Jayarvaman VII faces

At the centre of the great city of Angkor lies the Bayon Temple. The Bayon Temple has 52 towers with the huge serene faces of the Jayarvaman VII.

To the north is the great plaza adjoining 300 meters long Elephant terrace which must have been a spectacular meeting place 800 years ago.

Behind the Elephant terrace are the ruins of the Royal Palace and the pyramid temple of Phimeanakas.

The crowning glory is the huge dome of the Baphuon. This is under restoration at present and will be a spectacular sight when completed . The whole area is dotted with dozens of smaller temples and all are of some interest.

Ta Prohm Temple and its root systems

This huge temple complex looks much the same as when it was first discovered. The high lichen covered walls are distorted by the movement of the earth beneath. 800 years of history lie twisted and broken with sinister root systems of huge trees enveloping doors and windows in a stranglehold.

The distinction between organic and non-organic become blurred in the green pallor of light from the jungle canopy. The intensity of the jungle sounds here can be almost deafening.

Ta Prohm must be one of the most atmospheric places on Earth.

Preah Khan Temple

Another temple highlight is Preah Khan. This is the second largest temple enclosure. Within its square kilometre enclosure lies a temple complex which is almost as atmospheric as Ta Prohm.

The Preah Khan Temple Entrance

It is very much better preserved; though still has some eerie root formations; the most impressive being shown here. Preah Khan had an army of 50,000 to service the temple. It must have been an amazing sight.

Neak Pean

Neak Pean, "The entwined serpents", is an artificial island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Preah Khan Baray built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, in the second half of the 12th century.

Preah Neak Pean consist of a large central pool surrounded by 4 smaller square pools, used in ancient times as a bathing complex.

The name Neak Pean is derived from the sculptures of snakes (called Naga in Khmer) running around the base of the temple structure.

Ta Som Temple

Ta Som is a small temple built at the end of the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII. The King dedicated the temple to his father Dharanindravarman II (Paramanishkalapada) who was King of the Khmer Empire from 1150 to 1160.

Ta Som is located north east of Angkor Thom and just east of Neak Pean. This temple consists of a single shrine located on one level and surrounded by enclosure laterite walls.

Like the nearby Preah Khan and Ta Prohm the temple was left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins.

Mebon Temple

The Eastern Mebon temple once was located on an islet in a large water basin (the Eastern Baray) which today is dry.

The Eastern Mebon was built during the reign of Rajendravarman II (944-968) who named the temple 'Yashodharatataka' (the reservoir of Yashodhara).

Pre Rup Temple

Pre Rup is a temple built as the state temple of King Rajendravarman and dedicated in 961 or 962.

Pre Rup, located just south of the East Baray, or eastern reservoir, is a temple mountain of combined brick, laterite and sandstone construction.

Pre Rup was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Its extensive laterite and brick give it a pleasing reddish tone that is heightened by early morning and late afternoon sunlight.

Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea is a spectacular jungle temple around 60 km drive north east of Siem Reap. It is one of the ‘new’ highlights of Cambodia; having only been cleared of mines at the end of 2003. Built by Jayarvaman VII, in the style of Angkor Wat, its scale is huge, being well over one square Kilometer within its moat.

Beng Mealea is an extraordinary temple steeped in mystery and atmosphere. Approached by a four causeways; Beng Mealea appears to be a huge pile of rubble partially hidden in the trees. Once you get closer the high walls, the ancient Khmer Architecture reveals itself. The Koh Ker Angkorian site

Koh Ker was the Capital of the Khmer Empire period from the year 928 to 944 AD. In this short time; some very spectacular buildings and immense sculptures were constructed. Left to the jungle for nearly a millennium and mostly unrestored; the great archaeological site has been rarely visited until very recently.
